SALAMANDRE

The nutrient rich waters of Cape Breton's coast provide an abundance of marine life at every level of the food chain. They have also provided sustenance for the Island's early inhabitants. Mi'kmaq have been fishing these waters for over 10,000 years. They were goined by Acadian and Scotish settlers who establised communities along the coast. Today, these waters still provide and are an essential part of the local economy, from whale watching tours and birding expeditions, to the fishing industry which harvests lobster, crab, herring and other species.
